Dr. Diffie and Professor Hellman developed the public-key cryptography system in 1976. The advent of public-key cryptography, and the Diffie-Hellman algorithm for key exchange, allows the secure transmission of information over the Internet. Dr. Diffie is currently a Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems and Professor Hellman is a Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University.
