At Bell Labs, Dr. Flanagan contributed to the development of signal coding algorithms used in telecommunications,
voice-mail systems, and techniques for automatic speech synthesis and recognition. In addition, Dr. Flanagan invented
autodirective microphone arrays for use in teleconferencing and pioneered the use of computers for acoustic signal
processing. Dr. Flanagan is now Vice President for Research at Rutgers University, Director of the Center for Computer
Aids for Industrial Productivity (CAIP), and Board of Governors Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
