Professor Ziv made contributions to the communications field through his innovations in data-compression, information theory, and statistical communication. Particularly important was his work on the Lempel-Ziv algorithm, which allows for efficient encoding. Professor Ziv is currently the President of the Israeli National Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
